01 Penfolds Grange Bin 95. $590.
Deep purple. Intense musky violet/ dark plum/ chocolate/ liquorice aromas with well seasoned malty oak. A beautifully balanced concentrated palate with deep set plummy/ dark chocolate/mulberry flavours, lovely fine slinky sweet tannins, underpinned by malty/cedar oak. Builds up chalky/gravelly firm with excellent flavour length. A powerfully structured vintage with a long term future.100% Barossa Valley Shiraz 50% Kalimna vineyard (Barossa Valley) and 50% Barossa Valley. Winter rains replenished soil moistures which sustained vineyards during a very hot, dry summer marked sometimes by extreme heat. By late February/March cool, dry temperatures prevailed stabilising Baume levels. A superb vintage but in the context of the Grange market will lie in the shadow of 2002
02 Penfolds Grange Bin 95. $650.
Deep purple. Beautifully concentrated fruit-sweet blackberry/ mocha/ cedar/ espresso/ aniseed aromas. Very rich concentrated blackberry/ chocolate/ espresso/ liquorice flavours with vanilla and cedar oak nuances, firm chocolaty tannins, plenty of fruit sweetness, extract and persistency. Very elemental but classical vintage. 98.5% Shiraz, 1.5% Cabernet. 77.5% Kalimna Vineyard (Barossa Valley) and Barossa Valley. 22.5% McLaren Vale. A long cool summer, with intermittent rains in the Barossa, was followed by a warm dry autumn. This will be considered as one of the great Grange vintages of the decade. John Duval is succeeded by Peter Gago as Penfolds Chief Winemaker. Grange is once again made at Magill Estate for the first time since 1973.
04 Penfolds Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon $195
A long, seamless and very sophisticated cabernet despite its significant dimensions, structure and power. It opens with an intense violet-like perfume of aromatic cassis, blackberries and dark plums over dark chocolate and mocha-like oak, with meaty, briary undertones. Simultaneously very firm and cultivated, it’s steeped in piercing flavours of blackberries, dark plums and cassis, and backed by very smart oak and robust, pliant tannins. It’s long and savoury, with a lingering core of explosive dark fruit and dusty, dried herb-liked nuances. A genuine Bin 707.
02 Penfolds St Henri Shiraz $105
A vibrant crimson colour with a purple core. Savoury aromas laced with bay leaf/spice. Some blackcurrant/blackberry aromas show, most likely due to the 9% Cabernet, albeit from warmer climes in a cool year. There are some secondary characters, demi-glace/soy, no doubt from 14mths in large oak vats. A classy young St. Henri - elegance, balance, substance and persistence. Dark fruits with background liquorice and dark spices reflect Barossa and McLaren Vale origins. The palate is tight and defined, yet texturally round and soft with ri
